Kuwait City, August 23 (KUNA) -- August 23 ------------------------ 1980 - Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah issues a decree-law establishing a Council for the Protection of the Environment, chaired by the Minister of Health. 2000 - Member of Parliament Sami Ahmed Al-Munies dies at the age of 68. He was a prominent political figure who played a notable role in Kuwait’s political life, winning a seat in the first Parliament in 1963 and being re-elected to the Council in the 1971, 1975, 1985, 1996, and 1999 elections. 2003 - Kuwait joins the Arab Federation of Textile Industries. 2007 - A major fire breaks out at Al-Jahra Hospital, killing two patients and causing material damage. The following day, Minister of Health Dr. Maasouma Al-Mubarak submits her resignation. 2016 - The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development signs a project agreement with Bahrain totaling $138 million, as part of the Gulf Cooperation Council development program for the Kingdom of Bahrain. 2017 - The Ministry of Health inaugurates the new Farwaniya Specialty Dental Center, which has a capacity of 130 dental clinics, radiology departments, dental laboratories, and a central sterilization unit. 2020 - Deputy Emir and Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah addresses citizens, emphasizing the need to correct the course of executive and legislative work by stressing the rule of law and national unity.
