Canada: Imposes retaliatory tariffs on the United States starting September 8

Washington, Aug 22 (KUNA) -- Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Saturday that his country will impose retaliatory tariffs on the United States starting September 8, in response to the new tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump’s administration at a rate of 50 percent.

Speaking at a press conference, Carney said Canada would “match the new tariffs imposed by Washington dollar for dollar” to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses. He clarified that the Canadian government would announce further details about these retaliatory measures in the “coming days,” noting that the new tariffs would cover iron and steel, dairy products, household appliances, agricultural equipment, electronics, and other items.

Carney stated that Ottawa’s retaliatory tariffs would be implemented gradually to avoid sudden cost increases for Canadians due to limited alternative options. He emphasized that escalating the trade dispute between the United States and Canada would not benefit either side, whether businesses or individuals, and would prevent Canada and the United States from realizing many benefits that could have been achieved through joint efforts.

Earlier on Friday night, Carney had announced the suspension of trade negotiations with the United States, affirming that Canada would reciprocate any tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Canadian goods. In a statement released minutes before the deadline set by the U.S. administration for reaching a final agreement before imposing 50 percent tariffs on Canada, Carney said, “Although significant progress was made in negotiations, it was not enough to fulfill our commitments to the Canadian people.” (End) A.M.M. / T.M.A.
