Washington Welcomes Signing of Draft Final Agreement on Elections and Power Unification in Libya

Tunis, Aug 21 (KUNA) -- The United States expressed its welcome today, Friday, for the signing in Tunisia of the draft final agreement on elections and the unification of power in Libya. The Libyan News Agency quoted Mas’ad Paul, the senior advisor to the US President for Arab and African affairs, who posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account expressing Washington’s welcome of the progress made by Libyan parties in Tunisia toward reaching an agreement on election laws and the Higher National Authority for Elections. The US official added that the signing represents a significant step forward toward a reliable path to holding successful national elections, reaffirming the United States’ continued support for dialogue among the relevant Libyan parties and its cooperation with the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and international partners to help Libyans reach a permanent political settlement. He noted that Washington aims, through this support, to contribute to the establishment of a unified executive authority capable of managing Libya’s affairs nationwide. UNSMIL announced yesterday, Thursday, that Libyan parties had signed the draft final agreement aimed at resolving the political crisis and unifying the government and institutions capable of leading the country toward elections, following the conclusion of the mini-summit organized by the mission in the Tunisian capital.
