Egyptian Foreign Minister: Committed to supporting efforts to build Somali institutions and enhance their capacities
Cairo, Aug 18 (KUNA) -- Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Dr. Badr Abdelatty reaffirmed on Tuesday his country’s commitment to continuing its support for efforts to build Somali state institutions and enhance their capacities, particularly in the field of combating terrorism and extremism.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that this came during a phone call received by Minister Abdelatty from his Somali counterpart, Abdulsalam Abdi Ali, to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations and developments in the Horn of Africa region.
The statement clarified that Abdelatty stressed during the call the importance of providing sustainable funding for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), taking into account Egypt’s participation in the mission, and emphasizing the necessity of maintaining the mission and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), working to support and sustain them, and providing the necessary funding to preserve Somalia’s security, stability, and territorial integrity.
Abdelatty praised the growing momentum in Egyptian-Somali relations, affirming the commitment to continue developing the strategic partnership between the two countries across various political and economic fields.
He reiterated Egypt’s full support for Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, as well as the preservation of its national institutions, stressing Egypt’s firm rejection of any unilateral measures that could undermine Somalia’s territorial integrity or diminish its sovereignty.
The statement added that the Somali Foreign Minister, for his part, appreciated Egypt’s continuous support for Somalia at various levels and Egypt’s steadfast positions supporting Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, affirming the commitment to continue close coordination and consultation with Egypt and to enhance bilateral relations in a manner that serves the common interests of the two countries and their peoples.
