Germany opens new center to counter drone threats

Berlin, August 18 (KUNA) -- German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt inaugurated a new research center in the state of Saxony-Anhalt on Tuesday, aimed at developing means to counter drones, following a rise in incidents linked to this type of threat. Speaking at the opening, the minister said the center’s objective is to enhance research and innovation in this field and to establish Germany as a leading country in drone security. He added that the center will be a key component of the security framework for addressing hybrid threats posed by drones. According to the minister, planning for the establishment of the Drone Security Technology Center began in 2025, and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) will primarily manage it in the future. Up to 10 million euros (approximately $11.57 million) are scheduled to be invested in the center’s development over the coming years. Dobrindt stated that Germany has become the target of daily hybrid attacks launched by foreign powers, without naming any specific country or entity, noting that these foreign actors seek to undermine the country’s stability through espionage and sabotage. The minister pointed out that the incident involving an explosive-laden drone that occurred two weeks ago at Leipzig Airport once again highlighted the urgent need to develop effective defensive measures in this area.
