Club (Atletico Madrid) announces signing of Argentine defender Romero until June 2031

Madrid, August 15 (KUNA) -- Atletico Madrid announced on Saturday the signing of Argentine defender Cristian Romero from English club Tottenham Hotspur in a five-year deal aimed at bolstering the team’s defense ahead of the 2026-2027 La Liga season.

In a statement on its official website, Atletico Madrid said that Romero, 28 and nicknamed “Coti,” signed a contract valid until June 30, 2031, after passing a medical examination and completing the paperwork at the club’s offices at the Metropolitano Stadium. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Meanwhile, the Spanish sports newspaper Marca reported that the Spanish club will pay approximately 40 million euros ($46.28 million), comprising a fixed fee of 33 million euros ($33.18 million) and variable add-ons worth 7 million euros ($8.1 million).

Romero joins Atletico after spending five seasons with Tottenham, where he made 156 appearances, scored 13 goals, and provided seven assists. The Spanish club noted that the Argentine defender was one of Tottenham’s key players in their Europa League triumph in the 2024-2025 season, earning both the tournament’s best player award and the final’s best player honor.

On the international stage, Romero has earned 58 caps for the Argentina national team since making his official debut in June 2021. His move to Atletico follows his participation with Argentina in the 2026 World Cup, where his team finished as runners-up.

Atletico will begin their new La Liga campaign at home against Malaga next Wednesday, before hosting Villarreal in the second round on August 23. They will face Real Madrid in the seventh round on September 20 in the first Madrid derby of the season.

Romero is the fourth signing Atletico have completed during the summer transfer window as the club aims to compete strongly for the La Liga title after finishing fourth last season. (End) H.N.D./M.A.K.
