Kuala Lumpur, Aug 14 (KUNA) -- A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck northwest of the Indonesian city of Ende on Friday, prompting tsunami warnings for several Indonesian regions. The United States Geological Survey said on its X (formerly Twitter) account that the quake occurred about 68 kilometers northwest of Ende at 21:58 GMT, with an initial focal depth of 10 kilometers. Meanwhile, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency issued early tsunami warnings for East Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, West Nusa Tenggara, and Southeast Sulawesi. Indonesia lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most seismically and volcanically active zones, where several major tectonic plates converge. Their interaction and continuous movement cause frequent earthquakes in the Indonesian archipelago, which comprises thousands of islands, making the country one of the most earthquake-prone in the world.
