Iraq condemns Colombia's decision to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Syrian Golan

Baghdad, August 11 (KUNA) -- The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its strong condemnation and rejection on Tuesday of Colombia’s decision to recognize Israeli occupation sovereignty over the occupied Syrian Golan. In a statement, the ministry said that the Golan is occupied Syrian territory and that no party has the right to change its legal status or grant legitimacy to the occupation without legal basis, emphasizing that Colombia’s decision carries no legal effect and does not alter the fact that the Golan is an inseparable part of Syrian territory. The ministry stressed that recognizing the sovereignty of an occupying power over occupied land constitutes a dangerous precedent and undermines the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter, particularly the principle of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. It reaffirmed Iraq’s firm position rejecting the Israeli occupation of any Arab territory and expressed Iraq’s full solidarity with Syria in safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
