Egyptian and British Foreign Ministers Emphasize the Importance of Implementing the Peace Plan for Gaza
Cairo, Aug 11 (KUNA) – Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdelatty and British Foreign Secretary Edward Miliband stressed today, Tuesday, the importance of implementing the commitments of U.S. President Donald Trump’s peace plan regarding the Gaza Strip, advancing diplomatic solutions to developments related to Iran, and avoiding military escalation.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that this came during a phone call between Abdelatty and Miliband to discuss the trajectory of bilateral relations, as well as updates on regional developments of mutual interest.
The statement added that Abdelatty condemned the serious violations by the Israeli occupation in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, considering them to undermine the prospects of achieving security and stability in the region and fulfilling the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people.
He clarified that the two ministers agreed, in this context, to continue joint cooperation and to urge all parties to persist in negotiations and avoid military escalation, given its serious repercussions on the security and stability of the region, energy security, freedom of navigation, and international supply chains and trade.
Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s steadfast position on the importance of safeguarding the security and freedom of navigation in international waterways in accordance with the rules of international law.
He reviewed Egyptian efforts aimed at containing the crisis in Sudan, emphasizing Egypt’s commitment to Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national institutions, and rejecting any infringement upon them.
He stressed the importance of intensifying international efforts to ensure safe and sustainable access for humanitarian aid and to create conditions for launching a Sudanese-owned and Sudanese-led comprehensive political process that preserves state institutions and safeguards Sudan’s unity and stability.
He also pointed to the issue of water security and developments in the Horn of Africa, reaffirming the commitment to respecting the rules of international law and the principles of cooperation and consensus among Nile Basin countries, and rejecting unilateral measures that harm the interests of the downstream countries.
He emphasized the importance of preserving the security and stability of the Horn of Africa, which enhances the security of the Red Sea and supports stability and development in the region.
On the bilateral relations front, Egypt affirmed its commitment to continuing the development of economic, trade, and investment ties, building on the momentum witnessed in bilateral relations across various fields, particularly following the convening of the third session of the Egyptian-British Joint Participation Council last June and the follow-up on the implementation of the participation agreement between the two countries.
He also stressed the importance of enabling Egyptian exports to access the British market, which would contribute to increasing the volume of trade and encouraging further British direct investments in the Egyptian market, thereby serving the common interests of both countries.
For his part, the British Foreign Secretary appreciated Egypt’s efforts to support security and stability in the Middle East, reaffirming his country’s commitment to strengthening and elevating bilateral relations with Egypt in a manner that serves the interests of both peoples and to continue coordination and joint action to support security and stability in the region.
