Riyadh, Aug 11 (KUNA) -- The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia expressed its condemnation and rejection on Tuesday of the Colombian government’s recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Syrian Golan, affirming that this step contradicts international law and relevant resolutions of the United Nations.
In a statement, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that this recognition explicitly violates relevant United Nations laws, particularly Security Council Resolution 497, issued in 1981, which deemed Israel’s imposition of its laws, jurisdiction, and administration on the occupied Syrian Golan null and void and without legal effect.
The statement stressed that such positions do not contribute to achieving peace, but rather represent a departure from the firm international stance regarding the occupied Syrian Golan, entrench the logic of imposing facts on the ground, and undermine efforts to achieve peace in the region.
It reaffirmed the Kingdom’s steadfast position that the Golan is occupied Syrian Arab land, and that any measures or decisions aimed at changing its legal status do not create rights or confer legitimacy upon such actions.
The statement called on the Colombian government to review its position, adhere to international law and relevant UN resolutions, and continue its contribution to supporting efforts aimed at achieving security, stability, and just and lasting peace in the region. (End) AS / NS
