Yemeni government condemns Houthi militia attack on Al-Mukha port, holds Iran responsible
Aden, Aug 9 (KUNA) -- The Yemeni government strongly condemned on Sunday the attack launched by the Houthi militia on the Al-Mukha port in the Taiz governorate, which employed drones and missiles, and held Iran responsible for continuing to supply the militia with weapons and military technology.
In a statement, the Yemeni cabinet said the attack constitutes a blatant assault on a vital civilian and economic facility, and once again reveals the criminal nature of the militia and its disregard for the lives, interests, and national assets of Yemenis. It affirmed that targeting the port and vital infrastructure and facilities amounts to a war against the state, society, and the national economy, and comes within an Iran-backed project aimed at keeping Yemen in a cycle of chaos and destruction, and using its land, ports, and maritime routes to threaten regional and international security.
The statement warned that targeting the port represents a highly dangerous escalation, confirming that the Houthi militia’s threat is no longer confined within Yemen but has become a direct danger to regional and international security and stability, as well as to freedom of navigation and trade in the Red Sea.
It placed full responsibility for the attack and its repercussions on the Houthi militia, and held the Iranian regime responsible for continuing to supply it with weapons, expertise, and military technology that enable it to carry out such attacks and target civilian facilities, ports, and international navigation.
It affirmed that the government will fulfill its national and constitutional responsibilities to protect vital facilities, ports, and national assets, and will not allow any militia or external party to use Yemen’s land, institutions, and resources to harm the Yemeni people or threaten the security of the region and international interests.
It called on the international community to move beyond statements of condemnation and concern to a practical and deterrent stance against the Houthi militia and its supporters, to cut off their funding and arms supplies, and to hold them accountable for targeting civilian facilities, ports, and threatening international navigation.
It stressed that the path to peace in Yemen does not lie in leniency toward armed militias, but rather in ending the causes of escalation, enabling legitimate state institutions to extend their control over the entire national territory, and restoring the state’s monopoly on arms, thereby ensuring Yemen’s security and stability, protecting the interests of the region and the international community, and safeguarding freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.
Since noon on Sunday, the Houthi militia has carried out missile and drone strikes targeting civilian, economic, and vital sites and facilities in the coastal Red Sea city of Al-Mukha, with preliminary reports indicating civilian and military casualties.
