Yemen: Houthi militias target the city of Al-Mukha and its port with missiles and drones
Aden, August 9 (KUNA) -- The Yemeni government condemned on Sunday the Houthi militia’s targeting of Al-Mukha port in the coastal Ta’izz Governorate on the Red Sea with several missiles and drones, which caused severe damage to the port’s infrastructure amid reports of casualties and injuries.
In a statement received by the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), the Yemeni Ministry of Transport emphasized that the attack on Al-Mukha port constitutes a blatant violation of international laws and norms, endangering the safety of workers, civilian facilities, and maritime navigation, and threatening the security and safety of waterways in the region.
The statement warned of the serious repercussions of these hostile acts on the safety of maritime navigation, the marine environment, and the movement of commercial and humanitarian ships. It noted that continued targeting of ports and civilian facilities would deepen the suffering of the Yemeni people and threaten the country’s vital economic interests.
It reiterated the necessity of keeping ports and civilian facilities free from military operations and respecting the rules of international humanitarian law and international maritime law, thereby ensuring the protection of civilian infrastructure and its personnel, and guaranteeing the continued safe flow of navigation and trade.
The ministry called on the international community, as well as relevant international organizations and entities, to assume their responsibilities regarding these attacks, adopt a clear and firm stance against the targeting of civilian and maritime facilities, and work to ensure the protection of ports, sea lanes, and the safety of international navigation.
The Ministry of Transport affirmed its continued commitment to fulfilling its duties and responsibilities in protecting the transport sector, ports, and affiliated facilities, and in ensuring the continuity of maritime and shipping services despite the challenges and risks posed by these attacks.
Earlier on Sunday, the Houthi militia targeted sites and vital civilian and economic facilities in the coastal city of Al-Mukha on the Red Sea, with initial reports indicating civilian and military casualties.
