Saudi Arabia welcomes UN Security Council statement condemning Houthi attacks on the Kingdom and commercial ships

Riyadh, August 8 (KUNA) -- The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia welcomed on Saturday the statement issued yesterday, Friday, by members of the United Nations Security Council, which condemned the missile attacks launched by the Houthi terrorist militias against the Kingdom since July 13, as well as the attacks targeting commercial ships since July 22.

In a statement, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs appreciated the document’s emphasis on the necessity of adhering to international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, foremost among them Resolution 2216, and respecting Yemen’s sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity. It also welcomed the rejection of acts that threaten regional security and the rights and freedoms of maritime navigation.

The statement called on the international community to fulfill its responsibilities regarding the implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions and to take a firm stance against practices and violations that threaten the security and stability of the region, the safety of navigation and international trade, and that undermine efforts aimed at achieving peace in Yemen and the region.

The Kingdom reaffirmed its determination to safeguard its security, sovereignty, and right to self-defense, as well as the rights of its citizens, assets, and facilities against any attack targeting them, and to take all necessary measures in accordance with international law.

It also reiterated its steadfast support for the legitimate Yemeni government and the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to Yemen, aimed at achieving peace, security, and stability in Yemen, thereby enhancing regional security and stability and preserving the safety of maritime navigation.
