Yemen welcomes UN Security Council condemnation of Iranian aircraft's violation of its sovereignty
Aden, Aug 8 (KUNA) -- The Yemeni government welcomed on Saturday the United Nations Security Council’s statement on Yemen, which condemned Iran’s violation of Yemeni sovereignty by landing its aircraft at Sanaa and Hodeidah airports without the Yemeni government’s permission, as well as the Houthi militia’s attacks on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the attacks targeting commercial ships.
In a statement received by the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), the Yemeni Ministry of Foreign Affairs appreciated the Security Council’s affirmation that all flights to Yemeni airports must be coordinated with the Yemeni government and receive its prior consent, and its emphasis on adherence to international law and relevant Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2216.
The statement noted that the resolution includes an arms embargo and a ban on providing technical assistance, training, and financial support related to military activities to individuals and entities listed on the sanctions list, including the Houthi militias.
It clarified that the Security Council’s reaffirmation of Yemen’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and airspace strengthens the government’s firm position that restoring state institutions and enabling them to exercise their authority and fulfill their responsibilities across the entire national territory constitute the genuine pathway to achieving security and stability in Yemen, and contributing to safeguarding regional security and international navigation.
It further affirmed that the continuation of Houthi attacks, which pose a threat to regional security, underscores the need for effective implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions, halting the flow of weapons, technologies, and military expertise to the militias, and strengthening support for Yemeni state institutions and their capacity to protect sovereignty, secure coastlines, territorial waters, and international maritime passages.
