Qatar welcomes the release of 15 people detained by Congolese authorities

Doha, August 7 (KUNA) — Qatar welcomed today, Friday, the release of 15 detainees by Congolese authorities and the facilitation by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) of their transfer and handover to the Congo River Alliance (March 23 Movement) under the “Detainees Release Mechanism,” which was signed in Doha as part of the “Doha Peace Process.”

In a statement, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Qatar reaffirmed that the release of the detainees represents an important step toward building trust between the parties and creating favorable conditions for further progress toward reaching peaceful and sustainable solutions, thereby supporting efforts to achieve peace and stability in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Qatar praised the role played by the ICRC in implementing the “Detainees Release Mechanism,” ensuring safe transfer and handover in accordance with humanitarian principles, as well as the efforts of supporting partners in the peace process.

Qatar reiterated its commitment to continue its efforts to facilitate dialogue between the parties, based on its consistent approach of supporting peaceful conflict resolution and enhancing regional security and stability. It expressed hope that this step would serve as a catalyst for further actions that strengthen trust-building between the parties and meet the aspirations of the Congolese people for peace, development, and prosperity.

It is worth noting that the “Detainees Release Mechanism” is a formal protocol signed in Doha last September between the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Congo River Alliance (known as the March 23 Movement), as a core component of the “Doha Peace Process” aimed at resolving the conflict in the country’s east.
