Trump Orders Restriction on Birthright Citizenship in the United States

Washington, Aug 6 (KUNA) -- U.S. President Donald Trump signed two executive orders today, Thursday, to restrict the granting of U.S. citizenship to individuals born in the United States, following the Supreme Court’s ruling late last June upholding the right to birthright citizenship as enshrined in the Constitution.

Trump said during the signing ceremony at the White House, “We have faced a very disappointing Supreme Court decision regarding citizenship by birth (...) and therefore we are making adjustments.”

According to the White House, the first executive order “identifies certain categories of children of foreigners who are not entitled to citizenship by birth.” It stated that the second executive order “delegates presidential authority to both the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Homeland Security, directing them to halt the practice of (birth tourism).”

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on June 30 to uphold birthright citizenship, thereby nullifying the effect of an executive order issued by President Trump on the first day of his current term, which imposed restrictions on automatically acquiring U.S. citizenship upon birth on U.S. soil.

In its ruling, supported by six justices and opposed by three, the Supreme Court affirmed the U.S. constitutional principle that “children born in the United States are citizens from birth.”

The case centered on the executive order Trump issued in January 2025, aimed at restricting automatic citizenship for some children born in the United States, a move that sparked significant constitutional controversy in the country.

Trump’s executive order, which was rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court, stipulated that babies born in the United States would be denied citizenship if their parents had entered the country illegally or were legally residing and working there on temporary visas. (End) R.S.R / H.S.S
