Algiers, May 8 (KUNA) -- The African Union’s Peace and Security Council reaffirmed on Wednesday its commitment to strengthening the African voice in the United Nations Security Council, emphasizing the need to enhance coordination and consultation between the Council and the African Group in order to convey the African Union’s positions to the Security Council in a timely manner.

In a statement, the African Union noted that the Peace and Security Council, presided over by Algeria, held a meeting dedicated to the second quarterly briefing for 2026 on the activities of the African Group in the UN Security Council (A3). The statement clarified that the meeting was held to strengthen coordination between the A3 and the African Union’s Peace and Security Council, building on recommendations from previous quarterly meetings and following up on the implementation of outcomes from the high-level seminar on peace and security in Africa held in Oran, western Algeria.

In his opening remarks, in his capacity as current chair of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council, Algerian Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the African Union, Mohamed Khaled, stated that the unity of the African Group (A3) constitutes a fundamental pillar for safeguarding African interests amid current international challenges. He called for continuing efforts to advocate and advance the implementation of various common African positions on all peace and security issues within the UN Security Council.

He highlighted the necessity of pre-preparing the annual consultative meeting between the Peace and Security Council and the UN Security Council, ensuring that African Union decisions remain the primary reference for addressing peace and security issues on the continent. He commended the role played by the A3 and the African Union Mission to the United Nations in unifying African positions.

In this regard, the Council’s chair praised the distinctive dynamism Algeria brought to the A3’s work during its previous tenure on the UN Security Council, which renewed momentum for the mechanism whose impact continues to this day. (End) M.R. / R.J.
