US President Expresses Satisfaction with Iran Talks, Deeming Them "Proceeding Very Well"

Washington, May 8 (KUNA) – U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his satisfaction on Wednesday with the progress of talks with the Iranian side, affirming that they are “going very well” and that he expects results to emerge within two days. Speaking to reporters before departing California for Nevada, Trump said, “We have made significant progress; we are moving forward very well, and I believe it would be highly wise for Iran to reach an agreement, but we will see what happens, perhaps within 48 hours.” He reiterated that the Iranian side had contacted him requesting talks, yet he expressed surprise at Iran’s denial of this. Last Saturday, the U.S. president announced the postponement of a wave of intense strikes that the United States had intended to launch against Iran, to allow for the resumption of talks. The following day (Sunday), he stated that a new round of negotiations between the two countries would begin at the start of the week (the day before yesterday). Previously, the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 17 to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which briefly revived shipping traffic through the strait before Iran launched attacks on oil tankers transiting the strait off the Omani coast under U.S. military protection. In response, Washington carried out more than 12 waves of air raids and reimposed a naval blockade on Iran. (End) R.S.R. / S.A.M.
