American-Egyptian doctor wins Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Michigan

Washington, Aug 5 (KUNA) -- Abdulrahman Sayed, an American physician of Egyptian origin, announced on Wednesday that he defeated his rival in the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate race in Michigan, a key swing state in the American elections. The progressive Sayed, backed by Senator Bernie Sanders, narrowly edged out his opponent Haley Stevens, who was supported by Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, securing 48.5 percent of the vote to her 47.5 percent.

Sayed expressed his gratitude to Michigan voters via the social media platform X, outlining the key objectives that motivated him to run. He wrote, “Remove money from politics... Money in your pockets... Healthcare for all... Michigan... We won. I am extremely proud to be the Democratic candidate representing you in the U.S. Senate. Let’s win in November.”

In a speech following the announcement of his victory, he reiterated his thanks to voters and addressed immigration and healthcare policies, criticizing the dominance of major pharmaceutical and technology companies in the United States.

Sayed was born to Egyptian immigrants in 1984. He graduated as a physician specializing in epidemiology, worked in the medical field, and studied public health at Columbia University. He held government positions in public health, serving as the Chief Executive Officer of the Detroit Department of Health and as the city’s health officer from 2015 to 2017. In 2017, he resigned from his health director post to run for governor of Michigan, competing in the 2018 Democratic primary where he finished second among three candidates.

Sayed is now preparing for a decisive general election matchup in November against Republican candidate and former Representative Mike Rogers, who is backed by U.S. President Donald Trump. The race is viewed as a pivotal contest that could determine the future majority in the Senate. (End)
