US Secretary of State confirms progress in talks on the Strait of Hormuz

Washington, Aug 4 (KUNA) — U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed on Tuesday that progress has been made in ongoing talks concerning the Strait of Hormuz, noting that the strait remains open to navigation. He made these remarks while responding to a journalist’s question during the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Paraguayan Foreign Minister Ruben Lescano on strategic cooperation in the field of civilian nuclear energy.

Rubio said, “It is sufficient to say that progress has been made in these talks, although a final agreement has not yet been reached. We hope that it will be achieved in the near future.”

He added, “I believe there are two matters that should be discussed in relation to any agreement. The most important and significant agreement concerns their nuclear ambitions; under no circumstances should we allow them (Iran) to possess a nuclear weapon. President (Donald Trump) has been very clear on this point. Therefore, the ultimate goal is to ensure Iran is free of nuclear weapons.”

Rubio further explained, “As for the immediate agreement, which has attracted considerable attention, it pertains to the strait. There are currently ships and oil cargoes transiting the strait, which means it is open to navigation.” (End) R.S.R. / M.A.H.A.
