UK: Expansion of Gatwick Airport to add 100,000 flights annually from 2030

London, Aug 4 (KUNA) -- British Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said on Tuesday that the expansion project for Gatwick Airport, which includes the construction of a second northern runway, will add approximately 100,000 annual flights and increase the airport’s capacity by around 13 million passengers per year starting in 2030.

In a statement issued by the British government, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander noted that the expansion will provide travelers with broader travel options and enhance international air connectivity, thereby helping to consolidate the United Kingdom’s position as an attractive investment destination.

Alexander added that the government supports expansion projects that drive economic growth while aligning with climate objectives, pointing to an investment of more than £219 million (approximately $295 million USD) in sustainable aviation fuel production to reduce aviation emissions and ensure the sector’s future.

She emphasized that the project represents a significant milestone for Gatwick Airport, as it will attract new investments and create thousands of jobs.

According to the British government, the expansion will generate around 14,000 new jobs in the region and deliver additional economic benefits estimated at £1 billion annually (approximately $1.35 billion USD), thereby supporting economic growth in southeast England and the supply chains linked to the airport.
