OIC Calls for Coordinating Efforts to Uphold the Values of Peace and Defend Human Rights

Jeddah, August 4 (KUNA) -- The General Secretariat of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) called on Tuesday for all member states and organisations to coordinate efforts to uphold the values of justice and peace, defend human rights, and combat racism and Islamophobia. This was stated in an OIC statement marking the Islamic Day of Human Rights and Human Dignity, observed annually on August 5, in implementation of resolutions issued by the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers and in line with the objectives and principles enshrined in its Charter, which reaffirm the steadfast commitment to enhancing respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms and safeguarding human dignity in the Islamic world and beyond. The observance of this day falls within the context of expressing full solidarity with Islamic peoples suffering from foreign occupation and systematic racial discrimination, and of recalling the ongoing suffering of the Palestinian people in occupied territories, the inhabitants of the Jammu and Kashmir region, and the Rohingya minority. The OIC General Secretariat stressed that the continuation of these crises constitutes a blatant violation of international laws, norms, and conventions. It affirmed the necessity of enabling these peoples to attain their inalienable fundamental rights, foremost among them the right to security, peace, and a decent life, alongside access to healthcare, education, and welfare, as these are essential pillars for preserving human dignity and the right to life. It added that commemorating this day reflects the values and tolerant teachings of the noble Islamic faith, which preceded modern conventions in promoting equality and fraternity among human beings and encouraging dialogue and peaceful coexistence among peoples.
