Algeria delivers its annual contribution to the secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
Algiers, Aug 3 (KUNA) -- Algeria’s Minister of Environment and Quality of Life, Kaoutar Krikou, announced on Monday that the country has deposited its 2026 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) with the secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), aiming to enhance climate action and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Speaking at the sidelines of a national forum on the environment, the Algerian minister stated that “this contribution serves as a reference document outlining Algeria’s directions and objectives in climate action, particularly the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and adaptation to the impacts of climate change, within the framework of the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement.”
She emphasized Algeria’s commitment to fulfilling its international obligations and contributing to global efforts to address climate change and adapt to its impacts, following a balanced approach that aligns with national development requirements. She reiterated calls for “fulfilling international commitments related to climate finance, technology transfer, and capacity building, thereby reinforcing climate justice and ensuring a just transition toward more sustainable and resilient economies.”
She explained that the 2026 NDC reflects Algeria’s commitment to climate action through a document that balances national development needs with mitigation and adaptation objectives. It is anchored in several projects, notably the implementation of a national energy transition program targeting the production of 15,000 megawatts of renewable energy by 2035, alongside improving energy efficiency, supporting low-carbon industries, promoting the circular economy, and developing green hydrogen.
The minister noted that Algeria places special emphasis, through this roadmap, on adapting to climate change impacts by addressing water stress through expanding dam projects, seawater desalination, and reuse of treated wastewater, as well as developing drought-resistant agricultural practices. She added that the document also strengthens the protection of infrastructure, climate governance, and scientific research, while broadening the involvement of the economic sector, youth, and civil society in realizing climate action objectives.
She clarified that depositing this NDC holds particular significance as it comes ahead of the 31st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP31) to the UNFCCC, scheduled for November in Antalya, Turkey. She revealed that Algeria will present its vision, commitments, and proposals during negotiations and consultations on climate action.
Algeria ratified the UNFCCC in 1993 and is among the approximately 200 parties to the convention, which serves as the international framework for cooperation in addressing climate change by supporting mitigation and adaptation efforts. (End) M.R. / T.A.B.
