US President announces new talks with Iran tomorrow, Monday, after reversing decision on strikes

Washington, Aug 2 (KUNA) – U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that new talks with Iran will begin on Monday, hours after he ordered a halt to military strikes against Iran. Speaking to reporters aboard the presidential aircraft en route back to Washington, Trump said, “We will begin new talks with Iran on Monday. We are currently speaking with the Iranians about the format of the negotiations,” adding that the United States and Middle Eastern countries prefer to reach a deal with Iran rather than escalate militarily. He noted, “We will see whether Iran is ready to sign a deal,” referring to the U.S. attack he had canceled at the last minute, which was intended to be “the largest since World War II.” He pointed to a broad agreement on the Strait of Hormuz and indicated that there would also be an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program. Trump had announced on Saturday that he had agreed to suspend a planned attack on Iran to allow for a “quick” deal that would ensure the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and end the Iranian nuclear threat. In a post on his Truth Social platform, he wrote, “We have received a request from Iran and other countries in the Middle East to delay any attack on Iran in order to reach an agreement on the broad outlines of a potential deal.” He emphasized that the United States remains “on standby” to attack Iran “with great force and military capabilities.” (End) A.M.M./M.A.H.A.
