Egyptian Foreign Minister Discusses Regional Developments and De-escalation Efforts with His Qatari and Iraqi Counterparts
Cairo, Aug 2 (KUNA) -- Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdelatty held two separate phone calls with Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Iraqi Foreign Minister Fawzi Hussein to discuss regional developments and ways to de-escalate tensions and enhance diplomatic efforts to contain them.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the call with Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman addressed the outcomes of communications and diplomatic efforts aimed at advancing the de-escalation process, with both sides reviewing recent regional and international moves to contain escalation in the region.
The statement added that the two sides also discussed the repercussions of the resumption of military operations, emphasizing the importance of intensifying efforts to de-escalate, return to the negotiation track, prioritize political and diplomatic solutions, and respect the rules of international law, thereby contributing to the peaceful settlement of regional crises.
In the call, the two sides also discussed ways to strengthen relations between the two countries and build on the momentum characterizing Egyptian-Iraqi relations, enhancing cooperation prospects in various fields, alongside continuing coordination and consultation on regional issues of mutual interest.
The statement noted that the two sides exchanged views on recent developments in the region, reaffirming the importance of joint efforts to de-escalate, promote dialogue, support de-escalation efforts, and settle crises through political and diplomatic means, thereby safeguarding the security and stability of the region and sparing it further tensions.
The call also addressed developments in the Palestinian territories, where Minister Abdelatty stressed the importance of completing the implementation of the first-phase obligations of U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan, which would contribute to ensuring full access for humanitarian aid and preparing conditions for transitioning to subsequent phases.
In a related development, a statement issued by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said that Foreign Minister Fawzi Hussein expressed his country’s condemnation of the attack targeting two ships inside the Port of Damietta by a drone, reaffirming Iraq’s solidarity with Egypt and its rejection of any actions that threaten the security of civilian facilities and the safety of navigation.
