Algeria: Woman elected president of the new People's National Assembly for the first time in the country's history

Algiers, July 28 (KUNA) – Khleda Boudjedda, a deputy from the National Liberation Front (FLN) party, was elected today, Tuesday, as the new President of the People’s National Assembly (Parliament), becoming the first woman to hold the parliamentary presidency in Algeria’s history. Boudjedda secured 302 votes out of the 407 deputies present at the session, while the candidate from the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS), Amin Allouche, received the support of 57 deputies. The candidate from the Rally for Culture and Democracy (RCD), Hassine Rachid, obtained only seven votes. Boudjedda was endorsed by the parliamentary group leaders of her FLN party, the National Democratic Rally (RND), the Future Front (FP), the Movement for National Construction (Mouvement El Binaa), Al-Hurra Party, and Al-Shaab Party, as well as by deputies from the New Algeria Front (FNA) and the Algerian Hope Rally (RJA), to assume the presidency of the Assembly.
