Election of Algeria's UN Representative as President of the Economic and Social Council

Algiers, 23 July (KUNA) -- The Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Ammar Ben Djamel, was elected today, Thursday, by consensus of the member states as President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2027 session. A statement from the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that “this election, held during the Council’s organizational session to elect its President and Vice-Presidents, affirms the confidence that member states, particularly the African Group which nominated Ambassador Ammar Ben Djamel for the position, place in Algeria.” It added that “this recognition serves as an acknowledgment of the persistent diplomatic efforts undertaken by Algeria in support of multilateralism and international cooperation under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.” Ambassador Ben Djamel succeeds Lok Bahadur Thapa of Nepal in the presidency of the Council.
