Turkish Foreign Ministry: Montreux Convention is a key guarantee of Black Sea security

Istanbul, July 20 (KUNA) -- The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the Montreux Convention Regarding the Regime of the Straits constitutes one of the principal guarantees of peace, security, and stability in the Black Sea. In a statement issued on Monday to mark the 90th anniversary of the convention’s signing, the ministry explained that Turkey has applied the Montreux Convention, signed on July 20, 1936, with neutrality, transparency, and precision for 90 years. It noted that the convention affirmed Turkey’s sovereignty over the Turkish Straits, which are part of its territorial waters. The ministry added that the agreement has remained in force without interruption during both peacetime and wartime, demonstrating its importance as a key guarantee of peace, security, and stability in the Black Sea. The 1936 Montreux Convention permits the passage of ships through the Dardanelles and Bosphorus straits, subject to prior notification to Turkey 15 days in advance, and limits the stay of warships belonging to non-Black Sea states to no more than 21 days.
