President of the Arab Parliament Commends Belgium's Decision to Ban Products from Israeli Settlements in Palestinian Territories
Cairo, July 19 (KUNA) -- Arab Parliament Speaker Mohammed Al-Yamahi today Sunday praised Belgium’s decision to ban the import of products from Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories, calling on countries worldwide to follow suit and impose sanctions on settlement activities in accordance with international legal resolutions.
In a statement, Al-Yamahi affirmed that this step represents a victory for international law and sends a decisive message rejecting the legalization of illegal settlement activities, which constitute a serious violation of international law and resolutions of international legitimacy.
He urged all countries, particularly those in the European Union, to adopt similar measures to ban the import of settlement products and halt all forms of economic engagement with settlement activities, in fulfillment of their legal and ethical obligations and in alignment with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334 and the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice regarding the illegality of the Israeli occupation.
He stressed the need to ban settlement products, impose sanctions on settlements and the companies and entities dealing with them, and suspend any privileges or trade agreements with the occupation until it fully complies with international law and resolutions of international legitimacy and halts its illegal settlement activities.
He called on the international community to move beyond condemnation to taking practical and deterrent measures that end the policy of impunity, compel the occupation to respect international law, and enable the Palestinian people to attain their legitimate rights, foremost among them the establishment of their independent state with sovereignty and Jerusalem as its capital.
The Belgian government had yesterday decided to ban the import of products from Israeli settlements established in the West Bank, joining other European countries such as Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Norway. (End) MM / MA HA
