Arab League Secretary-General Calls for Leveraging International Momentum to Expand Recognition of the State of Palestine
Cairo, July 19 (KUNA) – Arab League Secretary-General Nabil al-Arabi called on Sunday to harness the international momentum to broaden the circle of recognition of the State of Palestine and to enhance joint action with the United Nations in support of Palestinian rights. The Arab League said in a statement that this came during al-Arabi’s meeting with the Permanent Representative of Senegal to the United Nations and Chair of the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, Ambassador Koli Seck, and his accompanying delegation.
The statement added that al-Arabi emphasized the League’s commitment to continuing coordination and cooperation with the Committee to strengthen joint action within the United Nations and international forums in support of the Palestinian people’s rights, foremost among them the right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state on the June 4, 1967 borders.
He stressed the importance of seizing the international momentum in support of the Palestinian right to expand recognition of the State of Palestine, warning against the continuation of Israeli settlement activities and unilateral measures in the occupied Palestinian territory, which aim to undermine the Palestinian presence and impose new facts on the ground.
He pointed to the danger of the occupying authorities targeting the city of Jerusalem, given its religious, historical, and legal significance, and commended the efforts of the UN Committee in shedding light on the measures aimed at altering the city’s identity and undermining the Palestinian presence there.
He expressed concern over the announcement by some countries, including Colombia, of their intention to move their embassies to Jerusalem, considering such steps a violation of relevant Security Council resolutions and a undermining of the city’s legal status.
Al-Arabi reviewed the outcomes of his recent meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, which discussed ways to support the resilience of the Palestinian people and enhance Arab and international action to mobilize support for the Palestinian cause, calling for the unification of regional and international efforts to protect the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
According to the statement, the Chair of the UN Committee reviewed the main outcomes of the International Conference on Jerusalem, organized by the Committee in cooperation with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Cairo yesterday, which reaffirmed the city’s legal and historical status and the importance of continuing international efforts to protect its legal status and counter Israeli occupation measures aimed at altering its Arab identity.
