Iran-opposition faction accuses Tehran of targeting its headquarters in Kurdistan with banned weapons

Erbil, July 19 (KUNA) -- The opposition Iranian party, Liberty, accused Tehran today on Sunday of using banned weapons during an attack on its headquarters in the Kurdistan Region. In a statement, the party said that Iran used munitions laced with white phosphorus in a drone strike on one of its facilities early today. It described the attack not merely as a crime, but as a blatant violation of the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law during wartime, noting that the use of such munitions, which cause human beings to burn and destroy the environment, is incompatible with the principles of humanity and states’ international obligations. The party called on the international community “not to leave this crime without a response,” urging the UN Secretary-General, the UN Security Council, the UN Human Rights Council, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and all relevant international bodies and institutions to take the necessary legal measures. Early today, eight members of the party were injured in a drone strike targeting one of its camps in the Darshkran area west of Erbil, with some of their injuries described as critical.
