Power outages in large parts of Libya due to severe heatwave

Tunis, July 18 (KUNA) -- The Libyan Ministry of Electricity, under the parliament-appointed government, announced on Saturday that power outages have affected all of eastern Libya and parts of the west, following the sudden shutdown of several power generation plants due to the region’s severe heatwave. The grid is now being supplied via the transmission line connecting Libya to Egypt.

In a statement, the ministry said the power grid experienced a complete blackout in most parts of the country after several major generation plants, including the Gulf and Misrata plants, suddenly went offline. The ministry confirmed that technical teams are working to gradually restore the grid according to technical plans, progressively bringing generation units and plants back online in preparation for the full restoration of electricity supply.

It further noted that an agreement has been reached with the Egyptian side to restore power supply through the Libyan-Egyptian interconnection line, which will enable the recharging of major plants and the gradual recovery of the national grid.
