(SANTCOM): Destruction of the maritime observation tower in the Iranian city of Chabahar

Washington, July 17 (KUNA) -- U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Friday the destruction of a maritime surveillance tower in the city of Chabahar, southeastern Iran, on Thursday according to U.S. Eastern Time. In a statement posted on the social media platform X, CENTCOM said its forces successfully destroyed the tower, which was part of a maritime surveillance network stretching along Iran’s coast on the Sea of Oman and was used by the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to track and target commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The statement affirmed that the destruction of the surveillance tower “will directly weaken the IRGC’s ability to coordinate attacks targeting crews of innocent civilian vessels.” In a separate post, CENTCOM denied the accuracy of Iranian reports claiming that Iran had launched an attack on the Al-Tanf military base in Syria, resulting in the capture or killing of U.S. soldiers. U.S. forces had resumed a naval blockade on ships heading to Iranian ports and coastal areas, or coming from them, starting Tuesday evening, in response to the targeting of commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
