(British Labour) confirms Andy Burnham's victory in the party leadership race, paving the way for him to become Prime Minister

London, July 17 (KUNA) – The British Labour Party confirmed on Friday that the former Mayor of Greater Manchester and Labour MP for the Manchester Central constituency, Andy Burnham, has won the leadership of the ruling party, thereby becoming the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. However, the official inauguration for the country’s highest office will take place next Monday.

Burnham assumed the party leadership after securing the support of 379 members, succeeding Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who announced his departure from the post last June. Speaking at a special party conference in central London, Burnham said, “The Labour Party will dedicate its strength and unity to serving the people who have waited long for politics to give them hope again.” He also praised outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer, “who has laid the foundation for building a better future for the country.”

Burnham emphasized the Labour Party’s commitment to finding “common ground” with opposition parties to make the future of the United Kingdom its top priority. The new Prime Minister did not reveal his cabinet lineup but assured that it “will reflect all voices from across the spectrum of the Labour Party.” He pledged to expand his governing philosophy, known as “Manchesterism,” which focuses on decentralizing power to local authorities, opposing centralization, and emphasizing business-supportive and region-based policies to boost the economy and other sectors, including housing, social care, and transport.

It remains unclear who will join Burnham’s government, although names such as current Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood have been floated for the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer. However, there is still no confirmed information regarding the formation of the cabinet.

On the international front, Burnham has faced criticism for his perceived lack of experience in issues of regional and global importance, despite expressing views on relations between the United Kingdom and the European Union, as well as the Middle East, particularly following a shift in his stance in a recently released video regarding the situation in the Gaza Strip.
