Iraqi Kurdistan: Targeting the Region is a Dangerous Escalation Threatening the Stability of the Country and the Region

Erbil, July 17 (KUNA) -- The Presidency of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq strongly condemned the attacks that targeted the region earlier on Friday, describing them as a “dangerous escalation” that threatens the security and stability of the area. In a statement, the Presidency noted that “targeting the Kurdistan Region and resuming the use of violence constitute a dangerous field development and a blatant violation of Iraqi national sovereignty,” emphasizing that the repercussions of these attacks extend beyond the region’s borders, “directly threatening the country’s stability and posing serious obstacles to all efforts and initiatives aimed at achieving peace in the region.” The Presidency concluded its statement by stressing the urgent need to halt these attacks, which undermine national interests and push the country toward unstable outcomes. Over the past 24 hours, the Kurdistan Region of Iraq had been subjected to a series of drone and missile attacks. The air defense systems of the international coalition forces shot down 16 drones in Erbil, while a missile strike in Sulaymaniyah killed eight Iranian opposition figures after their headquarters in the governorate was targeted.
