Washington, July 17 (KUNA) -- U.S. President Donald Trump renewed his call on Thursday night for Congress to expedite the passage of the “Save America Act,” describing the legislation as the cornerstone for ensuring the integrity of U.S. elections and preventing fraud as the date for the crucial midterm elections approaches.

In a speech addressed to the nation, Trump said, “Addressing the election crisis requires Congress to pass the ‘Save America Act’ without delay. I urge every American to contact members of the House of Representatives and the Senate and demand that they pass this bill immediately.”

He added that the bill “requires all voters to present a photo ID, mandates proof of U.S. citizenship before voting is permitted, and prohibits mail-in voting except for patients, persons with disabilities, military personnel, and travelers.”

Trump asserted that “there is no reason to oppose these measures other than a desire to cheat, because Democratic policies and their candidates cannot win in any other way.”

He stressed that his country “cannot be a great nation without free and fair elections, and every American deserves to know that their vote will be counted accurately.”

About two weeks ago, Trump refused to sign a housing support bill that enjoyed overwhelming backing from both Republicans and Democrats in Congress, protesting the failure to pass the “Save America Act.” (End) A.S.J. / R.J.
