Egypt hosts a meeting of the Khartoum Process on addressing the root causes of displacement in Africa

Cairo, July 16 (KUNA) -- The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted today, Thursday, the Khartoum Process meeting on addressing the root causes of displacement in Africa, jointly organized by Egypt and Italy in cooperation with Uganda, which holds the current chairmanship of the Khartoum Process.

In a statement, the ministry said that Assistant Foreign Minister for Multilateral Affairs and International Security Amr Al-Sharbini, in his opening remarks, called for the adoption of a comprehensive proposal to address forced displacement and irregular migration, focusing on tackling root causes, foremost among which are conflicts and lack of stability.

Al-Sharbini clarified that forced displacement has become a reflection of the interplay between conflicts and economic and climate challenges, and that migration management cannot succeed in isolation from efforts to achieve security and stability.

According to the statement, the meeting discussed the links between conflicts, displacement, and population movements, as well as strengthening the concept of shared responsibility and international solidarity in addressing the causes of displacement. It also examined support for recovery and building resilience in conflict-affected areas, with a focus on Sudan and the Horn of Africa.

The Khartoum Process serves as a platform for coordination and political consultation on issues related to irregular migration from East Africa and the Horn of Africa to European Union countries.
