Washington, July 16 (KUNA) -- The U.S. Department of Commerce announced on Thursday that Taiwan’s TSMC will invest an additional $100 billion in semiconductor manufacturing in Arizona, bringing its total investments in this sector in the United States to $265 billion. In a statement, the department said, “As a result of the historic trade and investment agreement between the United States and Taiwan, announced in January 2026, TSMC has declared an additional investment of $100 billion, raising its total U.S. investments to $265 billion.” It added that the investment will “lead to the creation of four additional advanced semiconductor manufacturing facilities, bringing the total number of leading semiconductor manufacturing and packaging facilities to 12.”

In this regard, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said in a statement that the additional investment will “secure the creation of tens of thousands of jobs for Americans and bring advanced semiconductor manufacturing back to the United States.”

For his part, TSMC Chairman and CEO C.C. Wei stated that the additional investment aims to “meet the strong and sustained demand from our key U.S. customers for years to come.” He noted that it will “strengthen the U.S. semiconductor ecosystem, bolster supply chains, and support the creation of significant job opportunities in the country.”

The U.S. Department of Commerce statement indicated that “the trade and investment agreement is expected to stimulate additional Taiwanese investments in the United States, as the agreement provides for $250 billion in direct investments by Taiwanese companies operating in the semiconductor sector and other industries, as well as an additional $250 billion in Taiwanese investments to bring other critical elements of the semiconductor supply chain to the United States.” (End) R.S.R / A.M.S
