US Departments of War and Justice Launch Joint Task Force to Prosecute National Security Leakers

Washington, July 13 (KUNA) — U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced on Monday the establishment of a joint task force with the U.S. Department of Justice to track and prosecute media outlets that leak sensitive national security information, with its operations and authorities to take effect immediately.

In a statement, Hegseth said, “To address the risks posed by leaks, effective immediately, I have delegated authority to issue directives to the Office of the General Counsel at the Department of Defense. This grants the office the authority to request and receive all necessary records, information, and support from various components of the Department in connection with investigations into media leaks.”

He added, “All components and personnel of the Department must give the highest priority to these requests. Furthermore, full and comprehensive responses must be provided to any directives issued by the Office of the General Counsel under this authority within 48 hours of their issuance.”

Hegseth emphasized that “leaking information endangers lives,” noting that “these new tools and procedures will significantly contribute to protecting our joint forces. Under no circumstances should the security of our nation be treated as a bargaining chip by those chasing fleeting headlines.”

He stressed that “access to classified and sensitive information is a sacred trust, and anyone who betrays that trust will face the full force of the law.”

He also expressed his gratitude to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and partners “in federal law enforcement agencies for their cooperation in these investigations to protect and safeguard U.S. national security.” (End) R.S.R. / M.A.H.A.
