Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Human Rights: Kuwait witnesses an important stage in the journey of women's empowerment in the military and security sectors
Kuwait City, July 12 (KUNA) – Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Human Rights Affairs, Ambassador Sheikh Jauhar Ibrahim Al-Duwaikh Al-Sabah, said on Sunday that Kuwait is witnessing an important stage in the empowerment of women within military and security institutions. This statement was made during a lecture titled “Women, Peace and Security,” which was hosted by the Ali Al-Sabah Military College and delivered by the Assistant Minister.
Sheikh Jauhar Al-Sabah outlined the key pillars of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, and highlighted Kuwait’s efforts to implement the related national plan. She also reviewed prominent national, regional, and international experiences in enhancing women’s participation in the armed forces and peacekeeping operations.
She emphasized that the National Committee for the Implementation of the aforementioned Security Council Resolution, which she chairs and which includes representatives from the Ministries of Defense, Interior, Justice, and Information, as well as the Supreme Council for Planning and Development and the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, continues to implement its programs aimed at consolidating the principles of the Security Council resolution and strengthening coordination and cooperation among national entities to translate its objectives into practical initiatives that support women’s participation in security and peacebuilding.
She noted that Kuwait is witnessing an “important stage” in the empowerment of women, following the Emiri decree appointing 59 female officers of the rank of second lieutenant from the first cohort of women in the Kuwaiti Army. She described this step as a national achievement that reflects the political leadership’s commitment to empowering women and enhancing their role within the military system, in line with the provisions of the Kuwaiti Constitution and Kuwait’s international obligations.
During the lecture, Sheikh Jauhar Al-Sabah also reviewed Kuwait’s efforts to implement the relevant national plan, alongside the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law. She affirmed that “empowering women in military and security institutions contributes to enhancing the efficiency of these institutions, strengthening security and stability, and supporting sustainable development.”
