Egypt and Turkey Emphasize the Importance of De-escalation and Containing Regional Tensions
Cairo, July 11 (KUNA) -- Egypt and Turkey stressed on Saturday the importance of de-escalation, containing tensions and unrest in the region, and intensifying joint efforts between the two countries to restore the negotiation track between the United States and Iran. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press statement that this came during a phone call between Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan, as part of the continuous communication and coordination between the two countries regarding ways to enhance bilateral relations and exchange views on regional issues of common interest.
The two ministers emphasized the necessity of committing to the implementation of the understanding between the United States and Iran, which would contribute to reaching a final agreement through dialogue and diplomacy, thereby sparing the region from the risks of military escalation. The ministry stated that the call addressed aspects of coordination within the regional quadrilateral mechanism, which includes Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan, where they affirmed the importance of continuing consultations on the security concerns of regional countries and adhering to the principles of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, refraining from the use of force, and non-interference in the internal affairs of states.
The two ministers also discussed a number of regional issues, foremost among them the Palestinian issue, where they rejected any attempts to displace the Palestinian people and stressed the need to halt escalation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, and to ensure full access for humanitarian aid.
The ministers also exchanged assessments regarding developments in Syria, Lebanon, Sudan, and Libya, emphasizing the importance of supporting efforts aimed at achieving security and stability and preserving the unity and sovereignty of state institutions, thereby contributing to enhancing security and stability in the region.
The call also addressed ways to elevate Egypt-Turkey relations across various fields, with both ministers praising the rapid development witnessed by bilateral relations in recent periods on all levels. They affirmed their commitment to building on the progress achieved in the relations between the two countries and following up on the implementation of the outcomes of the first meeting of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council, held in Cairo in February 2026, presided over by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The two ministers called for the importance of continuing to strengthen strategic dialogue mechanisms and developing economic and trade cooperation to achieve the common interests of the two countries and their friendly peoples. (End) A.F.F / N.S.A
