European Commission: Activation of Copernicus service to support efforts to combat forest fires in southern Spain

Brussels, July 10 (KUNA) -- The European Commission announced on Friday the activation of the Copernicus program’s mapping service to support Spanish authorities in monitoring wildfires raging in the Andalusia region in the south of the country. EU Crisis Management Commissioner Janez Lenarčič stated in a post on the social media platform X that “the Copernicus service provides maps and satellite images to help local authorities monitor the spread of the fires and assess the extent of the damage caused.” She emphasized that “the European Union continues to closely follow the developments of the fires, and the European Commission stands ready to provide further support to Spain if requested.” Earlier on Friday, official Spanish television reported that at least 11 people had been killed and 19 others were missing in the fire that broke out in the forests of Andalusia in southern Spain.
