Manama, July 10 (KUNA) -- The Kingdom of Bahrain expressed its welcome on Friday to US President Donald Trump's announcement of the initiation of procedures to remove Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism and for the US Congress to proceed with the necessary steps to bring the decision into effect.

In a statement, the Bahraini Ministry of Foreign Affairs considered this announcement an important step toward supporting efforts to rebuild Syria, enhancing opportunities to attract foreign investment and aid, and reintegrating the country into the global financial and economic systems.

The statement affirmed Bahrain's high appreciation for the US President's efforts to support the Syrian Arab Republic within the framework of his initiatives to lift economic sanctions and his endeavors to consolidate security, peace, and sustainable development in the region.

It also reaffirmed Bahrain's steadfast position in support of Syria's security, stability, and the unity and territorial integrity of its land, in line with the aspirations of its people for security, stability, and sustainable prosperity, and for the restoration of its active role in its Arab and international surroundings.

It is worth noting that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Wednesday the commencement of the process to remove Syria's designation as a state sponsor of terrorism, following the US President's notification of Congress of this step.

President Trump had informed his Syrian counterpart, Ahmed al-Sharaa, during their meeting in the Turkish capital, Ankara, on the sidelines of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit, that Syria's name would be removed from the US list of state sponsors of terrorism. (End)
