Germany welcomes submarine deal with Canada, calls it a "milestone for security" across the Atlantic

Berlin, July 7 (KUNA) -- German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius welcomed on Tuesday the Canadian government’s decision to award the German military systems company ThyssenKrupp the contract to build its new submarine fleet. In a statement issued by the German Defense Ministry, the minister described the move as a “milestone for strengthening security across the Atlantic.” The statement followed the announcement on Monday by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney that the German company had been selected to carry out the largest arms procurement project in Canadian history, after months of competition with a South Korean firm. The project involves the construction of 12 modern Type 212CD submarines, developed by the company in cooperation with the German and Norwegian navies, making Canada the third NATO member state to adopt this class, according to the statement from Berlin’s defense ministry. Pistorius emphasized in the statement that the project enhances defense cooperation among allies and contributes to strengthening security capabilities in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions amid growing security challenges. The total value of the project, including manufacturing, maintenance, and operation, is estimated at approximately 62 billion euros ($70.884 billion), with expectations of creating new jobs in shipyards in the northern German cities of Kiel and Wismar.
