Dr. Abeer Al-Bahouwa, Director of the Health Promotion Department at the Ministry of Health, emphasized the importance of early intervention in combating diabetes and raising community awareness about prevention methods and management of its various types. She noted that early detection helps mitigate health complications associated with the disease and protects the body’s organs from long-term damage caused by elevated blood sugar levels.

Speaking during the celebration of World Diabetes Day 2026, observed annually on November 14, Al-Bahouwa stated that the Health Promotion Department launched this year’s commemorative events under the theme “Early Action on Diabetes,” aiming to highlight the significance of prompt action against the disease and to enhance awareness of its risks.

She explained that diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when the pancreas fails to produce sufficient insulin, or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is the hormone responsible for regulating blood glucose levels. She pointed out that prolonged high blood sugar levels can lead to serious damage, particularly to the nerves and blood vessels.

Al-Bahouwa noted that diabetes is classified into three main types. The first is Type 1 diabetes, characterized by insufficient insulin production, requiring patients to receive daily insulin injections. The second is Type 2 diabetes, where the body cannot properly utilize insulin, potentially leading to elevated blood sugar levels and serious health complications if left untreated.

The third and final type is gestational diabetes, which involves elevated blood glucose levels during pregnancy that exceed normal ranges but do not reach the threshold required for a diabetes diagnosis.

In a separate statement, Khader noted that the conference features a comprehensive scientific program, including 66 specialized lectures delivered by 50 local and international medical experts, along with five advanced medical and surgical workshops held prior to the main events. She added that the conference serves as a scientific platform for exchanging experiences and staying updated on the latest developments and therapeutic innovations in obstetrics and gynecology and its sub-specialties, thereby contributing to the advancement of medical practices and the improvement of healthcare services for women.

She further stated that the conference topics focus on discussing the latest surgical and therapeutic techniques in obstetrics and gynecology, enhancing the skills of medical personnel, and fostering collaboration and integration among specialists, all of which support keeping pace with global advancements in the field.

She indicated that the organization of the conference aligns with efforts to promote continuing medical education, provide practical and scientific training opportunities for physicians, and leverage local and international expertise to improve women’s health care.
