The Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR), represented by its Petroleum Research Center, completed a research project titled “Development, Enhancement, and Implementation of a Blend of Developed Synthetic Polypropylene and Polyethylene Fibers to Improve the Properties of Reinforced Concrete.” The project was led by Dr. Salah Al-Anzi, Director of the Petrochemicals and Materials Technology Program at the Center, in collaboration with Equate Petrochemical Company, and with support from the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS).

The project also aims to maximize the added value of locally available polymers by converting them into specialized engineering products with practical applications in the construction and national industrial sectors. Additionally, it seeks to develop innovative research solutions that promote the use of local materials and strengthen collaboration between the research and industrial sectors.

The project’s results led to the development of polymer fibers from polypropylene and linear low-density polyethylene (PP/LLDPE) blends, which are manufacturable and usable in concrete. The findings demonstrated improved impact resistance of fiber-reinforced concrete, increased durability and post-cracking load-bearing capacity, along with a minimal effect on compressive strength.

Project outputs also identified potential applications for the developed fibers in industrial flooring, pavements, and precast concrete elements, as well as the submission of a scientific paper for publication in a peer-reviewed international journal.

This project aligns with KISR’s efforts to develop innovative scientific and technological solutions that serve the construction sector, enhance the utilization of local resources and products, support national industry, and contribute to achieving sustainable development in the State of Kuwait.
