Dr. Iman Al-Awadi, Director of the Nursing Services Department at the Ministry of Health, unveiled the department’s 2027 plan, which includes hosting visiting international experts to deliver specialized training programs for nursing staff. The plan also expands into new training areas such as dialysis, obstetrics and gynecology, and midwifery, alongside administrative courses on communication skills, teamwork, and strategic planning.

Speaking to Al-Jarida, Al-Awadi stated that the plan also involves developing mechanisms to assess the nursing workforce needs across various health facilities. This will be achieved by studying the required nurse-to-patient ratios for each work setting, identifying challenges related to the current distribution, and leveraging modern curricula and theories to plan and redistribute the workforce according to actual needs.

She added that the department is preparing a new project to launch an intensive training program for recent nursing graduates, aimed at facilitating their transition from the academic phase to the actual work environment. The program will be based on the practical needs of health institutions, and Al-Awadi noted that the project is still in the preparatory stage, with needs assessments being conducted to form its foundation.

Al-Awadi clarified that the 2027 training plan will see the continuation of the initiative to host international experts, building on previous collaborations with Gulf, Arab, and international institutions, as well as specialized hospitals. The department has previously engaged visiting experts to deliver lectures and training courses. Additionally, it has collaborated under a memorandum of understanding with the College of Health Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman to organize specialized courses lasting two weeks, covering both theoretical and practical training in pediatric nursing, cardiac care, and critical care.

Describing the update of the nursing uniform, transitioning from white to “Royal Blue,” as a significant and historic milestone in the profession’s history, Al-Awadi explained that this change responds to the preferences of nursing staff, who had sought to adopt scrubs instead of the traditional uniform. The choice of Royal Blue was made to reflect Kuwaiti identity.
