Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes condemned the “speculation” and “lies” that have recently circulated about the “Red Devils,” denying any tension with manager Michael Carrick and affirming his full confidence in him.
The English club ended a winless streak of nine consecutive matches across all competitions with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Italian visitors Roma in Matchday 4 of the new unified group stage of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.
In comments to Amazon Prime, Fernandes appeared upset when asked whether the result was enough to “save” his manager.
The 32-year-old attacking midfielder said: “The club needed this win, as did the players. We needed it as a group, as players, and as a coaching staff. We worked very hard to get out of this situation together.”
Fernandes added with a serious expression: “There has been a lot of media speculation, and many lies have spread about events inside the club, particularly regarding my relationship with the manager. They even claimed that we held a meeting to resolve things, which never happened.”
He continued: “The manager decided to keep me on the bench because my performance was not good, and that is completely normal. Some people thought it was punishment for my comments, and if that was indeed the case, it is entirely justified.”
