US President Donald Trump announced that the United States would halt its annual military aid to Israel, amounting to approximately $4 billion, by the end of the current year, under an agreement he said he had reached with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu months ago.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump stated that Israel no longer needed this aid, noting that it would still be able to purchase American weapons.
The announcement comes despite the existing military aid agreement between the two countries, which runs until 2028 and stipulates annual payments of $3.8 billion to Israel, amid uncertainty regarding the mechanism for its early termination.
