A telephone call took place this Tuesday evening between Badr Abdelatty, Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Head of the Egyptian Expatriates, and Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Spokesman for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nader Zaki, stated that the call was part of the periodic consultations between the two ministers, during which they discussed recent developments in the region and concerns that these could lead to a resumption of escalation and military actions.
He noted that the ministers addressed the intensive efforts undertaken by regional partners to de-escalate tensions, promote dialogue and diplomacy, return to the negotiating table, and reach a comprehensive deal that addresses the concerns of all parties.
Minister Abdelatty stressed the need for all parties to exercise the necessary flexibility and to seriously pursue a political solution to the crisis that would spare the region from significant risks it can ill afford. He further emphasized that Egypt attaches special importance and priority to the security of the Gulf states, viewing it as an extension of Egypt’s and the Arab world’s national security. He highlighted the necessity of continuing restraint, intensifying efforts, and maintaining communications to prevent military escalation, warning of the dangers and political, economic, and security repercussions that President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi cautioned against on Tuesday, not only for the region and its countries but for the world as a whole.
